Spravato® (Esketamine) Therapy

Ketamine interacts with the brain differently than conventional antidepressants, creating new neural connections associated with mood regulation, and reversing neural “disconnections” associated with depression. Rapid, positive changes in mood and pain symptoms can be seen after a short series of treatments, and when combined with other types of psychological support, the effects of ketamine can be prolonged significantly.

At Lucid, we focus on ketamine therapy through three approaches: Intramuscular (IM), Intranasal Spravato and IV.

1. Getting Started

Medical Assessment

The process starts with a medical assessment, led by Dr. Remi Drozd. During this session, Dr. Drozd will determine that Spravato is the right option for your unique needs, and that it will be covered by your insurance.

2. Preparation

Preparation Session with Integration Coach

Meet with your Integration Coach for a 50-minute preparation session where you will align on your goals and intentions for treatment, as well as discuss how to best prepare for your treatment.

3. Treatment sessions

Two-Hour Spravato Treatment Sessions

Experience your Spravato ketamine treatment session, administered by a licensed nurse or doctor. For the first month of treatment, your Spravato sessions will occur twice per week.

4. Post-treatment

Post-Treatment Integration Sessions

For the first four weeks of Spravato treatment, you will meet weekly with your coach for an integration session. This 50-minute session will help you process your experience and incorporate insights into your life.

5. Ongoing

Ongoing Treatments and Integration

After the first month of treatment, the frequency of Spravato sessions typically reduces to once per week, along with integration sessions, for the remaining four weeks. Once eight weeks of treatment has been completed, continue for as long as you and Dr. Drozd deem it beneficial.

FAQs

What conditions does Spravato treat?

Spravato treats the same conditions as other forms of ketamine, specifically focusing on treatment-resistant depression where patients have failed to see results with other oral antidepressants. Spravato offers rapid relief from depressive symptoms, often within hours or days, compared to the weeks or months that traditional antidepressants may require. This makes it a particularly valuable option for individuals who have not responded to other forms of treatment.

What should I expect during a Spravato treatment session?

Spravato treatment sessions are two hours in length. The Lucid Care Team will provide the medication for each session, and you as the patient will self-administer the medication nasally for up to three rounds in the first 15 minutes of the appointment. You then will relax in the comfort of the Lucid clinic for the remaining time of your two-hour session, enabling you to maximize your treatment experience.

Will I need someone to drive me home after treatment?

Yes. You will need someone to drive you home after your Spravato treatment session.

How often will I need treatments?

Spravato is delivered over a regimented program that lasts eight weeks, at minimum. Treatments are administered twice per week for the first four weeks, and then once per week thereafter. Once eight weeks of treatment has been completed, continue for as long as you and Dr. Drozd deem it beneficial.

What are the possible side effects?

Possible side effects of Spravato are minimal and can include nausea or headache, both of which can be treated by medication concurrently, such as Zofran or ibuprofen.

How is Spravato different from IV or IM ketamine?

Spravato is administered as a nasal spray, whereas intramuscular (IM) ketamine therapy is an injection into the upper part of the arm, and IV ketamine therapy is treatment through an intravenous drip.

How soon can I expect to feel results?

Patients who receive ketamine treatments often report that they feel positive effects on the day they start, and that relief is sustained well after the medicine has been metabolized and eliminated by the body. In fact, 86% of patients report improvement after the first session. Positive changes are incredibly subjective, and success looks different to each patient, but feeling better can take the form of subtle changes in your day-to-day function which may lead to improvements to your mood or pain. These effects have been seen to last anywhere from a few hours to several weeks after treatment. It is important to note that ketamine is not a cure for these disorders/symptoms, but it can be used as a tool for long-term management, and to drive change and transformation.

Is Spravato covered by insurance?

Yes. Spravato is covered by most major health insurance providers.
